The Bimbo Controversy

As you may have heard yesterday, the Philadelphia Union signed a $12 million deal with Bimbo Bakeries that will place their logo on the chest of the jerseys. If you're not familiar with Bimbo, you obviously don't live around many Mexicans.

Not surprisingly, this has pissed off a few locals as they feel the team has "sold out" to corporate money and severely uglified their uniforms. ESPN Girlsports even ran an article claiming that the sponsor may be SEXIST. While claiming that the name of a bread company is sexist is 1000% retarded, I can agree that this makes the uniform look terrible. But there's no reason to get all shocked and disgusted by this -- it's SOCCER. This is what they do.

Plus, let's take a look at the uniform of a purely American sport. To an outsider, this shit is infinitely more ridiculous.

Philly Soccer Fans Still Philly Fans

Manchester United -- the richest and most famous sports team in the world -- played its first stateside match in six years yesterday at a sold-out Linc against our expansion MLS Philadelphia Union. Although Man U ended up winning the match 1-0 without several of their starters, the Union looked impressive by all accounts. What am I most impressed with? The all-star play of F Sebastien Le Toux? The grit of MLS rookie Danny Mwanga? Nope. I'm impressed with Philly fans.

According to the Philadelphia Union Facebook page, the Sons of Ben (our cheering section) held shit down for Philly and massaged the ears of the Man U players and fans all night with "You Suck Asshole" chants and other miscellaneous vulgarities.

Philly's MLS Team: Join or Die!

Maybe it's because it's a World Cup year. Maybe it's the three cups of free work coffee coursing through my veins. Maybe it's because I just bought FIFA two days ago. I don't know what it is, but dammit, I am PUMPED for the Philadelphia Union's premier season.

I, like white people, love the idea of soccer. I don't know all of the stars...or rules...or particularly enjoy watching an entire match, but I LOVE the idea of my city getting a pro "football" club. Especially one with the greatest soccer scarf in the world. It's so Ben Franklin -- so American. Just look at our badass logo and colors (after the jump). It's like we took the St. Louis Rams and fucked them with the girthy dick of America!
