TheWizWit Wallpaper Wednesday!

As an African American, I know there's only one month a year that the rest of the country is forced to pay attention to my heritage. Well, the parts of my heritage that don't include scoring touchdowns and stand-up comedy. Yeah, it's the shortest month of the year. And the only one with an awkward "r" in the middle of it. And I know it's ridiculous to try to capture hundreds of years of history into McDonald's radio ads and crayon-book Martin Luther King, Jr. colorings by elementary school kids. But it's all we got. And in the spirit of Black History Month, I'd like to dedicate this week's wallpaper to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Why the Phillies? Well, they're pretty much the only team in the city with a legitimate chance at winning a championship. Also, in case you haven't noticed, the Phils have two all-star black players in a Major League that saw its percentage of blacks decline from 19% in 1995 to only 8% in 2007. Kudos to the team for winning a World Series and two pennants with Black Americans instead of foreigners.

So in that spirit (and same nonsensical spirit we've shown so far), I present: Black Roy Halladay!

I smell sitcom.

And thanks once again to Jocelyn C. for the photoshop.

  1. hahahahaha. It's refreshing to see that in the year 2010, an African American is comfortable enough to embrace the hilarity of black-face, which when used apropriatley leads to classic moments in history such as lil Sambo and Black Roy Halladay. Way to own the moment.

But seriously, Black History month only serves to segregate the black man further by allienating his history under the pretext of praise. We will never reach the promised land if we as a nation under god ignore the indiginity of a month that is celebrating a skin color.

" I have a dream, that one day, my childrens children, will sit in a desegragated class room, with little white children, and they will color in my face." MLK

ps. thanks for peanut butter and traffic lights.

  2. whoa whoa whoa...i don't mean to go on a rant here but...

There's nothing wrong with celebrating the cultures that make up this country. Whereas some may view the month as "segregat[ing] the black man further", I see it as taking time to reflect upon what we've accomplished as a nation -- both black and white peoples included -- to get race relations and the country as a whole to where is it today.

I fully understand and respect the opinion of many of those in America who feel that they are more properly following the Constitution by not separating the groups within the country or not making any one group "special". I get it. My view is that instead of turning a blind eye to the differences between those who make up this great land of purple mountains and fruited plains (ridiculous claims, btw), we should embrace those differences. Love them. Remember them. Touch them gently in the genitalia. Why? Because it is those very differences that make us strong and very unique as a nation. The fact that my ancestors were once slaves and now I'm just another asshole that shops at Target and goes to work at 9 is awesome. That shit is great and amazing and if I can have a month dedicated to reflecting on that journey I welcome it. I mean...look at China. Ain't no Puerto Ricans in China.

    In closing...black president.

ps - we invented the elevator, too.
