No Black People Work For The Reading Phillies

This is the semi-racist giveaway of the family-friendly Reading Phillies.  I'm not sure who signed off on this, or thought a Ryan Howard lawn jockey garden gnome was a good idea, but you can have your own at their August 3rd game.  [philly.com]

Regardless, all gnomes are creepy little buggers.  And yes, I'm looking at you David.  Without Swift, you were NOTHING.

  3. i feel like I've been trying to explain why certain things are racially insensitive/weird/stupid since like 4th grade. [sigh] i'm so very tired...such is the life of the black guy with white friends. Why can't rural/suburban kids just be cool!? anyway, it aint about black gnomes vs. white gnomes, its about the fact that it looks like bamboozled-esque racist imagery. As per the Inquirer:

"The original jockey statue, standing proud and usually carrying a lantern, shepherded runaway slaves to safety during the days of the Underground Railroad, explained Charles Blockson, curator of the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection at Temple.

But as time went on, lawn jockeys were often caricatured as a stooped-over black man with dark skin and painted-in white eyes and big red lips. They were usually displayed on lawns of homes in the South and served no real purpose other than to diminish African Americans."

I get that this "garden gnome" doesn't look exactly like this...but why even do this? Because there are no blacks in the office to say "ehhh...maybe just a bobblehead this time?"

And Ryan Howard didn't have a chance to so "no thanks" to this b/c he played for Reading and they own the merch rights. Capitalism!
