Philly Soccer Fans Still Philly Fans

Manchester United -- the richest and most famous sports team in the world -- played its first stateside match in six years yesterday at a sold-out Linc against our expansion MLS Philadelphia Union. Although Man U ended up winning the match 1-0 without several of their starters, the Union looked impressive by all accounts. What am I most impressed with? The all-star play of F Sebastien Le Toux? The grit of MLS rookie Danny Mwanga? Nope. I'm impressed with Philly fans.

According to the Philadelphia Union Facebook page, the Sons of Ben (our cheering section) held shit down for Philly and massaged the ears of the Man U players and fans all night with "You Suck Asshole" chants and other miscellaneous vulgarities.

But it seems as though not everyone in Philly was happy with the chanting.

Whatever lady, your mom is lower class.  And I've used F words to get my point across for years now and its ALWAYS fucking worked!

Also, were we chanting "You suck, Asshole" or "You suck asshole"? Very different meanings.

  1. The SoB say "For U" and maybe it sounds like F* You, but as far as I know the SoB do not use the language she describes.

  2. I was at the game...a few sections away from the SoB section. There were a few "you suck, asshole" chants throughout the game. They didn't offend me in the slightest.

Although, I'm a diehard Philly sports team I wore my Man Utd jersey to the game and rooted for them. I mean I've been a fan of them for years and the Union just came around this year. I'll continue to root for the Union for the MLS season though. Rooting for them over Man Utd. would be like rooting for my favorite D-3 college football team over my favorite D-1 college football team.

With all that said, it'd be hard to call that a home game for the Union even though it was in Philly. There was just as many (if not more) Man Utd fans at the game. I cheered for them the entire game and celebrated when they scored and no body said any thing at all. The atmosphere wasn't crazy like it is for a Flyers or an Eagles game.
